From the glimmering lights of the Las Vegas Strip or the ski slopes surrounding Lake Tahoe, most Nevada visitors, and even residents, never get the opportunity to experience our state’s storied mining industry. Thanks to world-class deposits of gold and other precious metals, mining is Nevada’s largest export industry, and the Silver State is the largest gold producer the U.S. Recently, the world-renowned Fraser Institute named Nevada as the fourth best jurisdiction in the world for mining investments.
Beyond the precious metals, other vitally important minerals and metals such as molybdenum, lithium, gypsum, copper, and diatomaceous earth are mined here. Nevada is home to the only lithium mine in the U.S. and has tremendous, untapped geothermal resources. Minerals mined in Nevada are critical components in our cars, cell phones, computers, batteries, solar panels, beer production, and much more.

By Dana Bennett, President of the Nevada Mining Association:
In January, Governor Brian Sandoval stood before the Nevada Legislature to deliver his final State of the State speech. It was an opportunity for a successful governor to tout his achievements. Those triumphs include recruiting more than 200 companies to Nevada; adding 38,000 new jobs to the state’s economy; growing the state’s renewable energy portfolio; and overhauling the way schools are funded in Nevada.
Additionally, for the first time in recent memory, the Silver State’s mining industry was recognized in the biennial address: “We all know the significance of lithium to our emerging sectors in advanced manufacturing and renewable energy, and we know that mining is critical to the future of the new Nevada economy.”

Most Nevadans – certainly those of us reading this newspaper – know about mining’s contributions to the state’s northern counties. For those looking to do business in this region, Elko’s perennially –popular mining expo offers plenty of opportunity to see the latest and greatest from all along the supply chain.
Hosted by the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority, the Elko Expo is one of the oldest trade shows in the industry and is tremendously popular. But every four years, the Elko Mine Expo is a tasty appetizer for a much larger main course: the international mine expo (MINExpo).
