Land Use

Environmental Responsibility

Nevada's mining industry gives the environment the highest priority. It continually strives to operate in an environmentally responsible manner - protecting wildlife, reclaiming mined land and employing new technologies to make operations environmentally safer.

Nevada's mines have accepted this challenge and the responsibility associated with guaranteeing that environmental disturbances are neither irreparable nor dangerous to society.

In addition to applying its own environmental initiatives, the mining industry is subject to a broad range of state and federal laws and regulations covering virtually every aspect of mine operations.

All of these efforts - voluntary actions coupled with government requirements - work together to form the environmental practices of today's modern mining industry. Prior to the beginning of any exploration at a mine site, a plan must be filed in Nevada. In addition to detailing how the mine will be constructed and assessing the overall environmental impact of future exploration and mining activity, the plan must contain documentation for how land disturbed during mining operations will be reclaimed.

Importantly, money to pay for the complete reclamation of the site must be set aside, and surety or bonding provisions must be made that are satisfactory to the state. These efforts and others are a permanent part of the modern-mining process in Nevada as well as in the nation to improve environmental practices.
