The Nevada Mining Association hosted its annual convention September 5-8, 2018, along the beautiful shores of Lake Tahoe.
For the 40th consecutive year, miners from all over the world gathered to network, have fun, and celebrate a great year of Nevada mining. Here are some of the highlights from the 2018 convention:
It’s all about networking
Convention attendees had ample opportunities to network during the event. Activities like the reverse expo gave vendors and operators the chance to meet face-to-face in a series of short meetings. Nightly receptions and activities like the golf tournament at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course also made for excellent opportunities to meet and talk business with fellow conventioneers.
Informative speakers
The NvMA convention always offers a great lineup of speakers that keep attendees up to date on the mining industry and other issues taking place around Nevada. 2018 was no different. Newmont’s Jerry Pfarr, the new NvMA Chairman of the Board, kicked off Saturday with his plans for the Association over the next year. Gubernatorial candidates Steve Sisolak and Adam Laxalt both spoke, as did Joe Balash, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary of Land Minerals Management. The Nevada Independent’s Jon Ralston offered his thoughts on the 2018 election and Applied Analysis’s Jeremy Aguero gave his annual presentation on the state of Nevada’s mining industry. Kristin White from Jackson Kelly PLLC and Mark Ashby of Lead Training discussed the steps businesses can take to prevent workplace violence. The convention also featured a panel discussing the future of mining technology that included Paul Caudill (CEO, NV Energy), Mike Gray (Cat Connect Manager, Cashman Equipment), and Andy Shotly (Superintendent, Barrick Turquoise Ridge Mine).
Celebrating safe and responsible mining
The highlight of every convention is the annual Safety Awards, which recognizes the men, women, and operations that exemplify Nevada mining’s commitment to workplace safety. This year, 51 miners, and 29 operations were recognized for their great work at a luncheon that closed out the convention. The Nevada Division of Minerals also announced the recipients of its Reclamation Awards. This year, five operations were honored for their dedication to responsible mining.
Fun and friends
It wouldn’t make sense to host a convention at Lake Tahoe without enjoying the amazing recreational activities the lake offers. In addition to the golf tournament, attendees spent a beautiful day outside at Zepher Cove, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, parasailing, or just putting their toes in the sand and enjoying a quiet afternoon at the beach. One of Tahoe’s most popular bands, The Dead Winter Carpenters, filled the dance floor during the Chairman’s Dinner, and the entire convention set a relaxed, casual environment for people to catch up with old friends and make new ones as well.
