Spring Time Safety Share

Spring is officially here! Temperatures are starting to (slowly) increase and people are starting to spend more time outside of the house. Before you start your spring cleaning, here are some tips on how to stay safe.

Lawn & Garden Protection

Warmer temperatures mean people will be outside to work in their yard and gardens. Protect yourself by wearing proper clothing. Gloves help protect gardeners from cuts and skin irritations. Those operating lawn mowers and power tools should wear long pants, safety glasses, and hearing protection.

Sunscreen

Even when the temperature isn’t especially warm, you are still susceptible to sunburns. Wear sunscreen on any part of your body not covered by clothing.

Drink Water

It’s important to protect more than your skin when working outside. Dehydration can cause a number of health ailments, including cramping, nausea, and heat stroke. When working outside in warmer temperatures, it’s recommended to drink one quart of water every hour and to take breaks every 15 minutes to rehydrate.

Rain & Lightning

It’s true that April showers bring May flowers, but rainstorms also present the threat of lightning. Check the weather report and avoid working outside if possible during the rain. If you’re outside and see lightning, find shelter immediately and avoid going outside again for a half hour following hearing thunder.

Watch the Roads

Wet winters can cause tire damaging cracks and potholes on roads. When driving, be extra observant to avoid larger potholes and remember that puddles can mask potential hazards like potholes..
