One common thread that makes up the tapestry of the mining world is a sense of thankfulness for the opportunities that each miner’s career can provide for self and for family. As a Senior Foreman at Klondex Mines Ltd., Kim Spear’s 19-year career in Nevada mining has allowed him to travel far and wide.

Spear got his start in mining in his home town of Price, Utah and moved to Farmington, New Mexico. Eventually, he relocated to Winnemucca, Nevada, where he currently resides. While Winnemucca may be home, Spear is grateful for years of travel, bringing him to different parts of the country. Whether it was a scouting trip, looking for specific equipment, or attending mine competitions, the life of this miner is anything but static.

On the job, spears duties include managing staff and activities such as contract longhole drillers, contract maintenance, haulage activities, and shifters, along with their respective crews. Spear has been at the Midas Mine in Winnemucca for almost three years.

Outside of mine life, he enjoys hunting and fishing, as well as family above all else. Though he does carry a degree in business from Bellevue University in Nebraska, Spear knows that anyone can succeed in an industry with a broad range of career paths. When asked about career opportunities for others in the industry, his response was clear:

“The sky is the limit.”
