A team of volunteers from Kinross Nevada were on hand at Wayne Bunker Park in Las Vegas as a part of the Fox 5 Vegas Super Build Playground Program on July 25. The group spent the morning assisting with the demolition of old park equipment as the City of Las Vegas refurbishes and beautifies the area.

Monday, January 17 is Martin Luther King Day. It is a day to remember an American and Civil Rights icon, but also an opportunity to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by taking action to make our communities a better place to call home.

Geology is the study of the Earth and what it is made of. Geologists also study events that have changed and shaped the Earth over time. The concept of the rock cycle is used to explain the continuous changing of rocks from one type to another and back again. Tectonic activity combined with weathering and erosional processes result in the constant recycling of rocks.

The earth’s crust is made up of many different types of rocks, but the three main types of rock are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and are defined by their formation process. Geologists identify rocks based on the formation process, their physical properties, and what minerals it contains.
Minerals are very important and play a major role in our economy, industry, and health. They are the building blocks of our planet and rocks and minerals are mined to help make things we use everyday.

The Nevada Mining Association will welcome Amanda Hilton as its first ever Chairwoman of the Board in September 2021. Amanda spoke with Fox 5 Las Vegas about her upcoming role and her path to becoming the General Manager of the KGHM Robinson Mine near Ely.

Joining the chat are Catherine Raw, Barrick Gold Corp., COO North America; Emily Jaenson, Reno Ace's GM; and moderating the chat is Susan Clark, PhD.

Catherine is the executive responsible for the North America region. She was formerly Chief Financial Officer of Barrick. Catherine joined the company in May 2015 as Executive Vice-President, Business Performance, and was previously co-manager of BlackRock’s flagship mining funds. Catherine also worked for Anglo American in London and Johannesburg, and as a geological field assistant in Sweden. She holds the chartered financial analyst designation, a master’s degree in natural sciences and an MSc in mineral project appraisal.

Emily is the second person to hold the role of General Manager for the Aces, and the first female GM in the Pacific Coast League in nearly two decades. Jaenson previously worked for the Aces from 2013 to 2016 and returned as GM in 2018. Upon taking on the role of GM, she became the highest-ranking female executive in Minor League Baseball (MiLB).
