For some, following the career paths of their parents is a given. For others, it could feel like the worst idea in the world. But for the Ashby family, well…it just plain makes sense.

A veteran of the mining industry, Elko, Nevada’s Jason Ashby has worked in the industry for more than 20 years. His experience has taught him that if you “work hard and do the right things, the mining industry will treat you well especially those that stick through the ups and downs.” What better a lesson to teach your own son than that?

That’s why the regional manager for Joy Global is encouraging his son, currently in high school, to pursue a career in mining. The younger Ashby is interested in studying engineering when he goes to college.

Jason Ashby also began his journey in mining at a young age, working as a summer student for two years through a scholarship program as he earned his associates in business at Boise State University.  He was then offered a job at a mining equipment dealer.

“If you like an adventure and the potential for strong career path opportunities, then the mining industry is the place to be,” Ashby said.

Ashby appreciates the chance to tackle difficult problem solving in his role as regional manager. He also likes the opportunity to work with people, including helping customers resolve issues.

“I continue to stay in the mining industry as I not only thoroughly enjoy the variety and challenges of the job, but it has also provided a good living for my family and career advancement opportunities,” he said.

Outside of his career in mining, he enjoys watching his kids play sports, fishing, hiking and spending time at the lake.
