Teachers from all over Southern Nevada gathered at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas for the 27th annual Nevada Mineral Teachers Workshop. Before breaking out into the day’s classroom sessions, attendees were treated to breakfast while being greeted by NvMA Chairman Kris Sims and Nevada Division of Minerals Administrator Rich Perry.

Following the welcome, teachers headed to their selected classes, which included a wide variety of offerings on Nevada mining and geology, presented by leading professionals in both fields. Classes included lectures, activities, and supplies that teachers can take back to their classroom and share with students. It also gave educators in Nevada’s most urban area an opportunity to converse face-to-face with industry representatives who largely work in the state’s rural communities.

“In Las Vegas, our students don’t see or hear much about mining,” said Clark County teacher Mike Wies. “In one of my sessions, we had a great Q & A with mining representatives who talked to us about the employment opportunities available in the industry. Some of my students don’t plan on attending college after they graduate high school, and I learned that mining can present them with a higher paying, long-term career path than what they may have access to if they stay in Las Vegas. The workshop has really been worthwhile.”

The workshop concludes tomorrow, March 23rd, where educators will attend one of three great field trips. The trips include:

Blue Diamond Gypsum and Red Rock Canyon

The McCaw School of Mines & Las Vegas Rock

Pabco Gypsum & Great Unconformity
